Feathers are what makes birds distinctive from other animals. An interesting fact is that birds are related to reptiles and their feathers actually evolved from the scales of reptiles long ago. All birds have feathers, and they are necessary for flight but not all birds can fly. So, it’s obvious that different types of feathers serve different purposes.

According to Mya Thompson, the co-director of Engagement in Science and Nature at the Cornell Lab, “Each feather on a bird’s body is a finely tuned structure that serves an important role in the bird’s activities.”
“There are flight feathers which are specialized for flying; contour feathers covering the body to protect themselves from sunlight and water; soft and fluffy down feathers to give a fluffy appearance and provide insulation by trapping air; and finally, the semi plumes which provide insulation and play a role in flight and mating.”
Thompson further added, “Often we can readily tell how a feather functions, but sometimes the role of a feather is mysterious, and we need a scientific study to fill in the picture.”
