Toy Manufacture Mattel Introduces Gender Neutral Barbie Dolls

Toy manufacturing company Mattel, which created Barbie, Lego, hot wheels, and many more have come up with a new creation of gender-inclusive dolls where children can dress up the doll in gender of their wish. This concept is named as Creatable World, the line consists of six “customizable” dolls available in different skin tones. The dolls are sold in kits containing two wigs and a selection of clothing and accessories, allowing children to style the toys with short or long hair, and a skirt, trousers, or both.

This doll can be a boy, a girl, neither, or both. Mattel, the same company that created Barbie, calls it the world’s first gender-neutral doll and hopes to redefine who gets to play with what, erasing the traditional taboos.

“Toys are a reflection of culture and as the world continues to celebrate the positive impact of inclusivity, we felt it was time to create a doll line free of labels,” Kim Culmone, Senior Vice President of Mattel Fashion Doll Design said and they also say that it will “knocks down barriers to play” and enable all children to “express themselves freely”.

These dolls will be sold $29.99 a pop, with the slogan “A doll line designed to keep labels out and invite everyone in.” With this move, the company is betting on where it thinks the country is going.

TIME noted the 11-inch dolls’ “lips are not too full, the eyelashes not too long and fluttery, the jaw not too wide. There are no Barbie-like breasts or broad, Ken-like shoulders,” the magazine said.
