After the famous and also very destructive eruption in 1980 of this Volcano, Mt. St. Helens has been known as the most destructive and one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the United States. It is situated in Washington and it continues to build up its magma activity.
After the famous eruption, the force of the explosion has caused the mountaintop to be destroyed. The eruption has taken away more than 1000 ft from its peak. But over time with the magma activity, a new dome structure is being built at the center of this volcano. This happens due to the shape of the volcano and also as a result of magma activity. It forces the magma to spill out on the crater to become a part of the Volcano as it cools off. A Volcanologist John Eichelberger who is from the Alaska-Fairbanks university explained that this mountain was acting as a toothpaste tube that pushed out toothpaste with time.
To study and document the eruption and the activity of this volcano, the USGS (United States Geological Survey) has placed cameras. They have contributed to compiling a 86 second long time-lapse to show the growth of the Volcano from 2004 to 2008. This project has also surveyed the amount of magma the volcano has spilled out. It has summed up to 125 million cubic yards of magma that has, later on, cooled off to create the new dome.
