A well-known artist for his giant installations in public places is Ernesto Neto. and one of his newest creations is the GaiaMother Tree. It is a 65-foot tall installation, a tree that is like a crochet structure. This structure which is in Zurich’s Central Station had been built by him in collaboration with the Fondation Beyeler. The people can walk into the structure from the base through the bight colored hand-knotted cotton.More info & Photo courtesy: Ernesto NetoFondation Beyeler | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube | Tumblr

The structure that was constructed using a traditional finger-crocheting technique had been complete by a team of 27 people within several weeks. The tree of green and orange color is from tall the floor to the top ceiling. And the trunk of the tree is balanced by looping the crochet branches around the ceiling beams. And then the ends of the branches are weighed with several spices like cloves, cumin, turmeric, and black pepper. The spices weigh about 1,300 pounds and the scent of them is throughout the space.

There’s space inside the tree for people to relax. Ernesto had said that that this idea is to slow down our time and to give us time to breathe and feel life inside us. This creation of him was inspired by the time that he had spent working with an indigenous community, Huni Kuin of the Amazon region, Brazil. He had also said that this work is about intimacy. The creation was displayed on the station premises until 29th July 2018. To know more about Ernesto’s work visit Tanya Bonakdar Gallery website.
