When we encounter something we used to watch as kids, we are likely to experience a powerful sense of nostalgia. We re-watched the old cartoons a million times. We had a list of movies that we knew by heart and replicated in our backyards with our pals. Cartoons influenced who we were and are now. They’re a haven of solace and happy childhood memories.

These Russian cartoons are likely to be remembered by those who grew up in post-Soviet nations and Eastern Europe. “What the heroes of Soviet cartoons look like in my imagination,” a project by Russian artist Evgeny Shvenk. The artist redraws these legendary figures more contemporary and realistic manner, allowing us to see how they could seem in the future.
